Isn't she a beauty?
A couple of weeks ago I went out and bought myself a blackberry pearl 8130. So far, I have run into several issues, mostly surrounding our service provider (Telus Mobility), but for the most part, I am in L-O-V-E with this phone. I couldn't be more satisfied with a purchase.
I can charge it from my laptop, play games (although I'm not big on this), watch videos/movies, listen to music, take pictures, browse the web and SO much more. I absolutely adore the voice dialing. No programming needed, and it reads names fairly accurately.
The 4GB SD card should be here in another week or so. I can't wait.
Applications
So far, there are only a couple of applications I've used worth mentioning.
JiveTalk , an all in one messenger application is wonderful if you have a data plan (which I do, of course). I can finally use MSN without having to go - and stay in - the web browser. Although it offers quite convenient messaging tools, I like it mostly for its customizable LED message indicator. It's nice to be able to distinguish between an SMS message and a web IM by a small flashing light. It's fairly discreet.
BeamBerry - I use this one quite often for viewing documents, and haven't yet used it for its other features. Although it boasts an ability to print from the blackberry, and online storage, I can get storage anywhere, and I can print from my computer. It is nice, however, to be able to view office/pda documents. There aren't many apps out there to do this with blackberry just yet, and I'm
patiently impatiently awaiting the release of
Documents To Go from DataViz. Then I'll be able to edit office documents.
eoffice from Dynoplex boasts an ability to edit office documents, but I don't like the need to convert the files first. It takes WAY too long and let's face it, nobody wants to wait 10 minutes to convert a file. Thank goodness for free trials because this one sells for around 100$.
Find My Berry and
Berry Locator both pretty much work the same. The only difference is a GPS email sent to your email with the approximate location of your berry. I tried this feature out, and it narrowed it down to a 8569 meter radius. That's pretty, um, useless. The feature I DID like was the flashing screen on the Find my Berry, and the loud alert (Fully customizable. It's hilarious to hear it yell "THIS PHONE IS STOLEN") that goes off regardless of ringtone setting - even if it's on silent ! You send an email to your blackberry inbox with the subject "findme" or whatever you've set it to be, and a message for the person who finds it in the body of the email. When someone finds the phone and presses a button, the email that you sent to your phone will pop up with whatever you want it to say (hopefully instructions for returning your phone). It's approximately 5$ and almost silly not to have.
I found several useless apps, most of which mimic already installed apps that come with the pearl. I haven't found too many useful things.
I'm still looking for new and relatively affordable apps.
Bugs
Telus doesn't tell you, and it's not included in the manual, but to install applications on a blackberry pearl, you need to download
software OTHER than the desktop manager and the device manager.
Pretty Things
I know, I'm a geek. I'm excited about my blackberry pearl. I bought
THIS to pretty it up a bit and then decided to make my laptop match like
THIS .
The keypad is a full QWERTY board, but it has two letters per key. The first hour of using this phone was HELL. I couldn't work the keys for the life of me, and had to push them harder than I was accustomed to. After practicing for a short time, I don't know what I did on a phone before this, and find it really REALLY awkward to SMS message on a normal cell phone.
HTC TOUCH
Raoul has the HTC Touch. It's pretty cool, and ORIGINALLY the phone that I wanted ... until I saw how small the onscreen keyboard is. It comes with a free trial of office mobile, and has SO many media rich features that are absolutely amazing. Overall, not the phone for me, but he loves it.
I do, however, find myself amused with the media menu. You bring it up by dragging your finger from the bottom of the phone upwards. It pops up like a cube, and you can switch to most used contacts, or other menus by dragging your finger left or right across the screen to turn the "cube of menus". It's pretty neat.
Also, when you're viewing a picture, if you use your finger in a clockwise fashion on the screen, the phone will zoom in on the area you circled. Counterclockwise zooms out.
We've already hit a few bumps in the road with our service. The internet keeps kicking out, and apparently we're with the ONLY provider that doesn't yet have a fix for video streaming. We got screwed out of the promotional sale (a difference of 150$ I was LIVID), and in return, received 720$ in billing credits. Fair trade :) I had an issue with internet connection due to a hardware issue that required pulling the battery out and putting it back in. I'm just WAITING for Raoul's screen to break ... I can just see it happening.
Other than those little issues, we're SO happy to have these little gadgets.
